Peter held his hand out. He did not know what a kiss was. Wendy did not want to hurt him, so she took off her thimble and gave it to him. Peter said he would give her a kiss too, and he gave her a button off his coat. It was not the kind of kiss that Wendy wanted, but she put it around her neck on a string and said she would always wear it.
She was going to ask, “Doesn’t your mother kiss you?” when Peter told her something. “I haven’t got a mother,” he said, “and I don’t want one. What use is a mother to me?”
“How old are you?” asked Wendy.
“Don’t know,” said Peter.
“A mother tells you how old you are,” said Wendy, “She always knows.”
“You see,” said Peter, “I ran away the day I was born.”
“What a silly thing to do!” said Wendy.
“Not at all. My father and mother were talking about the time when I would be a grown-up man. And I don’t want to be grown-up! I won’t! I want to stay a little boy for ever and ever.”

피터는 손을 내밀었습니다. 그는 키스가 무엇인지 몰랐습니다. 웬디는 그의 기분을 상하게 하지 않으려고, 골무를 빼서 그에게 주었습니다. 피터는 자기도 키스를 주겠다고 말하며 코트에서 단추를 하나 떼어 주었습니다. 그것을 웬디가 원하던 키스 따위가 아니었지만, 웬디는 그것을 줄에 달아 목에 걸고 항상 그것을 차겠다고 말했습니다.
웬디가 “너의 엄마는 네게 키스하지 않으시니?”하고 물으려 하는데, 피터가 뭐라고 말했습니다. “나는 엄마가 없어.”하고 그는 말했습니다. “그리고 원하지도 않아. 엄마가 내게 무슨 소용이 있어?”
“넌 몇 살이야?” 웬디가 물었습니다.
“몰라.” 피터가 말했습니다.
“엄마는 네가 몇 살인지 네게 말씀해주셔.”하고 웬디가 말했습니다. “엄마는 항상 아신단다.”
“실은” 피터가 말했습니다. “나는 태어난 날 도망쳤어.”
“그런 바보 같은 짓을!” 웬디가 말했습니다.
“전혀 그렇지 않아. 엄마와 아빠는 내가 어른이 되는 때에 대해서 말씀하고 계셨어. 나는 어른이 되고 싶지 않아! 난 되지 않을 꺼야! 나는 영원히 언제나 어린 소년이고 싶어.”
