If you hold something against someone, you let something which they did in the past influence your present attitude towards them and cause you to deal more severely with them than you would otherwise have done.
hold something against someone은 어떤 사람이 과거에 했던 일 때문에 그 사람에게 가혹하게 대하는 것을 말한다. Thomas lost the case, but never held it against Charlie. (Thomas는 재판에서 졌지만 결코 Charlie에게 가혹하게 대하지 않았다.) 같이 사용하면 된다.
비슷한 표현들을 살펴보면 We can't fault him for it. (그에게 비난할 수 없어.), He's really not to blame for it. (그 사람이 비난 받을 건 아니야.), It's not really his fault.(정말 그의 잘못은 아니라구.) 등이 있다.
