The bear and the Travelers

Two men were traveling together, when a Bear suddenly crossed their path. One of the men climbed quickly into a tree, and tried to conceal himself among its branches. The other, seeing that he must be attacked, fell flat upon the ground; and when the Bear came up and smelled him all over with his snout, he held his breath, feigning death. The Bear soon left him, for it is said a bear will not touch a dead body.
When the Bear had gone, the traveler in the tree came down to join his companion, and, as a pleasant joke, asked, "What was it that the Bear whisperd in your ear?" His friend replied very gravely, "He gave me this advice: 'Never travel with a friend who deserts yoiu at the approach of danger.'"


곰과 여행자

두 사람이 함께 여행을 하고 있을 때, 곰 한 마리가 갑자기 그들의 길을 가로질렀습니다. 그들 중 한 사람은 재빨리 나무로 기어올라가 나뭇가지 사이에 몸을 숨기려 했습니다. 나머지 사람은 공격을 받을 수 밖에 없음을 알고, 땅에 푹 쓰러졌습니다. 곰이 다가와 코로 그 사람을 샅샅이 냄새 맡을 때, 그는 숨을 죽이고 죽은 척 했습니다. 곰은 곧 그를 떠났습니다. 곰은 죽은 시체는 건드리지 않는다는 말이 있거든요.
곰이 가버리자, 나무 위에 있던 여행자가 내려와 자기 동료와 합류했습니다. 그리고 유쾌한 농담삼아 "그 곰이 자네 귀에 속삭인 말이 뭐였나?"하고 물었습니다. 그의 친구는 매우 진지하게 대답했습니다. "내게 이런 충고를 하더군. '위험이 다가올 때 자네를 버리는 친구와 함께 여행하지 말라'고."
