Chusok
북미에 Thanksgiving Day가 있는 것처럼 우리에겐 한가위가 있다(to observe Chusok, or Hangawi, the Harvest Moon Festival). (It falls on the 15th day of the eighth month of the year by the lunar calendar). (With the Sunday before the three-day holiday, this weekend will a four-day holiday). "한국에는 더도 말고 덜도 말고 한가위만 같아라"란 인사가 있다("Let's wish Hangawi lasted all year!" is a traditional Korean greeting).
(There is always a massive exodus of people from the country's urban centers to rural areas on Chusok). (As much as half of the Korean population of 45 million is expected to visit their hometowns during the holidays).
(The most important observance, however, is the ancestor-memorial service, a mass for the dead held at each home in the early morning on Chusok Day). (The ancestor-memorial services are performed not only on festival days, but also on the anniversary of the death of the loved ones).
Thanksgiving Day (※ voa
In the United States on Thanksgiving day, families gather around the dinner table. A prayer of thanks is given.
And then the turkey, hot from the oven, is brought in. The beautiful, brown bird, surrounded by the traditional dressing, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie, has become a symbol of that first Thanksgiving. In a way. the turkeyh has become - on this day at least - the national bird.
For most of us, it represents the one holiday that always brings the family together.
