Too Late

"How did it happen?" the doctor asked the middle-aged farmhand as he
set the man's broken leg.
"Well, doc, 25 years ago..."
"Never mind the past. Tell me how you broke your leg this morning."
"Like I was saying... 25 years ago, when I first started working on the
farm, that night, right after I'd gone to bed, the farmer" beautiful
daughter came into my room. She asked me if there was anything I
wanted. I said no, everything is fine. "Are you sure?" she asked. "I'm
sure," I said."
"Excuse me," said the doctor, "What does this story have to do with
your leg?"
"Well, this morning," the farmhand explained, "Then it dawned on me
what she meant, I fell off the roof!"

때 늦은 깨달음
“어떻게 된 일이오?” 의사가 중년인 농장 일꾼의 부러진 다리를 치료하면서
물었다.
“네. 선생님, 25년 전…”
“옛날 이야기는 말고. 오늘 아침 어떻게 다리가 부러졌는지 말해 보세요.”
“말씀드리는 겁니다…25년 전, 내가 이 농장에서 일을 하기 시작했던 그날
밤 내가 침대에 들어간 바로 직후, 농장 주인의 아름다운 딸이 내 방으로
왔어요. 그 여자는 내가 원하는 것이 있는지를 물었습니다. 나는 모든 것이
잘 되어 있어서 필요없다고 했습니다. 여자는 ‘정말예요?’하고 물었습니다.
‘그렇습니다.’ 라고 나는 말했습니다.”
“여보세요. 그런 이야기가 당신 다리하고 무슨 관계가 있단 말입니까?”
“네, 오늘 아침 그 여자의 진심을 깨닫게 되자, 난 지붕에서 떨어졌습니다!”
그는 설명했다.
