Peter's Joke ^.^

 이번에는 한국의 독자들을 위해 Peter 가 좋아하는 joke 하나를 소개한다. 아래본문에서 주인공 카우보이가 swindlers를 'sidewinders'로, horse를 'hoss'로, another를 'anotha'로, isn't를 'ain't'로, finish를 'finnish'로, have done을 'dun' 등으로 발음하는데 유의하면서 읽도록 하고, 주인공의 말투에 맞추어 무식하게 번역을 했는데 거부감 없기를 바란다.

A cowboy rode into town and stopped at a saloon for a drink. Unfortunately, the locals always had a habit of picking on strangers, which he was. When he finished his drink, he found his horse had been stolen. He goes back into the bar, handily flips his gun into the air, catches it above his head without even looking and fires a shot into the ceiling.
"Which one of you sidewinders(=swindlers) stole my hoss(=horse)?" he yelled with surprising forcefulness. No one answered.
"Alright, I'm gonna have anotha(=another) beer, and if my hoss ain't(=isn't) back outside by the time I finnish(=finish), I'm gonna do what I dun(=did) in Texas! And I don't like to have to do what I dun in Texas!"
Some of the locals shifted restlessly. He had another beer, walked outside, and his horse is back!

He saddles up and starts to ride out of town. The bartender wanders out of the bar and asks,
"Say partner, before you go... what happened in Texas?"
The cowboy turned back and said, "I had to walk home."

    한 잔 생각이 난 카우보이가 한 술집에 들렀다. 불행히도 그 마을 사람들은 이방인을 골탕먹이는 나쁜 버릇이 있었는데 그가 걸려들었다. 한 잔하고 나오니 말이 사라지고 없었다. 술집으로 다시 들어간 카우보이는 잽싸게 총을 공중으로 뽑아 던지더니 보지도 않고 머리 위에서 낚아채고는 천장을 향해 쏘면서 하는 말,
    "어느 썅x이 내 말을 훔쳤어, 엉?" 그의 쩌렁쩌렁한 고함소리에 모두 놀래 쥐죽은듯 고요해졌다.
    "그래, 아무도 안 훔쳤다 말이지, 좋타! 맥주 한 잔 더 꺾을 때까지 말이 안 돌아오면 텍사스에서 했던 것처럼 처리하겠어! 또 그 짓 하기 싫지만 할 수 없어!"
    일부 사이에 부산한 움직임이 있었다. 한 잔 더 하고 나가니 말이 돌아와 있는 게 아닌가!

    안장을 채우고 떠나는 카우보이에게 바텐더가 와서 물어보았다.
    "형씨, 떠나기 전에 한마디 물어 봅시다. 텍사스에서 무슨 일이 있었수?"
    카우보이 돌아서면서 왈, "집에 걸어가야 했소."



    Q.'He is less interested in sports than his younger sister is.'에서 마지막 'is'는 꼭 붙여야되나요?

    A. 반드시 그러하지는 않지만 붙이는 것이 standard English입니다. 예를 들어 '내가 그 보다 더 크다'의 표현은 엄밀히 말하면 두 사람의 체구를 비교하는 것이기 때문에 'I am bigger than he is big.'(그가 큰 것 보다 내가 더 크다.)가 완전한 표현입니다. 줄여서 'I am bigger than he is.', 'I am bigger than he.', 또는 informal 한 구어체에서는 'I am bigger than him'처럼 목적격이 오기도 합니다.
