Praise or not?

The New York Times의 관련기사의 한 부분을 살펴보자.

"Praising every time lowers a child's motivation," said Dr. Ron Taffel, a Manhattan psychologist. "It cheapens the praise, and children become dependent on praise."

Dr. Barry Lubetkin, director of the Institute for Behavior Therapy in Manhattan, believes that while some parents overpraise, "Most parents don't praise enough. Praise is extremely important in building up a sense of children's own abilities."

  • become dependent on: ...
  • undermine: vt. ...

    Q. 독자 Julee는 지난 주의 질문에 'You wanna see my opinion?' 'Is the expression 'you wanna see my opinion?' OK if I use it to you and common people? Is it a real informal one?'

    A. Want to의 준말 wanna, going to의 준말 gonna, had better의 준말 'd better등은 informal한 구어체나 친구 사이의 computer chatting 등에서는 널리 쓰이지만, formal한 speech나 특히 written English에서는 쓰지 않도록 주의하십시오. 위의 표현은 지금 많은 다른 독자들께서도 읽고 계시는 formal한 상황이기 때문에, 'Do you want to see my opinion?'
