Chewing Gum (1)

We all know about chewing gum. It is the sweet people buy just to chew but not swallow.
History tells us that the man most responsible for chewing gum was Mexican dictator, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Ana. He was the General who defeated the Texans at the Alamo in 1836. A few months after that famous battle, Santa Ana was captured and to return home to Mexico.
Instead of going straight home, the General took the long way--east to New York City. He took with him a large amount of a strange material called chicle. It was the dried juice of a tree found in the jungles of Mexico and Central America. General Santa Ana believed that chicle could replace rubber. And he looked for an American inventor to help him.
