이솝우화에 겁에 질린 생쥐가족이 모여 고양이 목에 방울을 달자는 제안을 내놓은 것까지는 좋았는데, ‘Who will bell the cat?' 이라는 질문에는 아무도 답을 못했다는 이야기가 나온다. 'To bell the cat'은 여기서 유래되어 ’위험한 일을 하다‘란 뜻이 된 것이다.
Another expression, not often used now, is 'to be somebody's cat's paw.' It means to be fooled into doing someone else's dirty work. It comes from an old story about a monkey who wants some nuts heating on a fire. The monkey tries to steal the nuts. But he burns his fingers. So, he seized the foot-or paw-of a cat. And he uses that to pull the nuts out of the fire.
The expression 'fat cat'
someone who is rich. You often hear it during political compaigns. Some 'fat cat' give lots of money to politicians they hope will be elected.
