caucus는 보통 비공식적으로 몇 명의 실권자들이 모여 정치 요직의 후보들을 선출하는 모임을 말한다. 이 단어가 왜 이런 뜻을 갖게 되었는가는 수수께끼로 남아 있다. 근래에는 caucus의 은밀한 선출방식이 여론의 반대에 부딪쳐 보다 공개적인 방식인 전당대회로 대치되었다.
