Dark Horse (3)

스포츠와 정치가 연결된 표현이다. 원래 dark horse는 우승 가능성이 별로 없었는데 예상외로 빨리 달려 제일착으로 들어오는 말을 가리켰다. 이 단어가 19세기 중반 정치용어로 등장, 당시 무명의 민주당 후보가 대통령에 전격적으로 당선 되었을 때 그를 지칭하는 말로 쓰였다. 그 이후 정치뿐 아니라 다방면에서 이 단어가 쓰이게 되었다.

Polk had been the leader of the House of Representatives from 1835 to 1839. He also had been governor of the state of Tennessee. But as a national leader, he a political nobody. Nevertheless, Polk surprisingly won the Democratic nomination and was elected president. This is what happened.
