스포츠와 정치가 연결된 표현이다. 원래 dark horse는 우승 가능성이 별로 없었는데 예상외로 빨리 달려 제일착으로 들어오는 말을 가리켰다. 이 단어가 19세기 중반 정치용어로 등장, 당시 무명의 민주당 후보가 대통령에 전격적으로 당선 되었을 때 그를 지칭하는 말로 쓰였다. 그 이후 정치뿐 아니라 다방면에서 이 단어가 쓰이게 되었다.

getting the nomination. But he opposed making the territory of Texas part of the United States, as another state. He was against it, because there was slavery in Texas. Van Buren did not want another slave state in the Union. As a result, he lost support among those Democrats who supported slavery.
