At the 1844 convention, Van Buren could not to win the nomination. The convention was deadlocked. The Democratic leaders decided that the only wise thing would be to run a "dark horse" - a man who could unite the party.

So one of the party leaders proposed the name of James Knox Polk. Polk won. And the party united behind him. He defeated his opponent, Henry Clay of the Whig Party, to become the eleventh president of the United States.
