There was once a king of Scotland whose name was Robert Bruce. He had need to be both brave and wise, for the times in which he lived were wild and rude. The King of England was at war with him, and had led a great army into Scotland to drive him out of the land.
Battle after battle had been fought. Six times had Bruce led his brave little army against his foes; and six times had his men been beaten, and driven into flight. At last his army was scattered, and he was forced to hide himself in the woods and in lonely places among the mountains.


브루스와 거미(1)

옛날 스코틀랜드에 로버트 브루스라는 이름의 왕이 있었습니다. 그는 용기 와 지혜 모두를 가져야만 했습니다. 왜냐하면 그가 살던 당시는 험하고도 거친 시대였기 때문입니다. 잉글랜드 왕이 그와 전쟁을 하고 있는 중이었으 며, 그를 나라에서 몰아내기 위해 막강한 군대를 스코틀랜드로 진군시켰습니다.
잇따라 전투가 벌어졌습니다. 여섯 번이나 브루스는 그의 용감한 소수 병력 을 적군을 향해 진군시켰지만, 그의 군대는 여섯 번 모두 패하여 도망을 치게 되었습니다. 마침내 그의 군대는 흩어지고 그는 숲속과 산 속의 한적한 곳에 몸을 숨기지 않으면 안되었습니다.

  • had need to be: had to be와 같은 의미.
  • the times: 그가 살았던 시대란 의미.
  • wild and rude: 험하고 거친.
  • at war with him: 그와 교전 중(him은 Bruce).
  • to drive him out of the land: 그를 그 땅으로부터 내쫓기 위해(him은 Bruce, the land는 Scotland임).
  • battle after battle: 계속되는 전투.
  • against his foes: 그의 적 즉, 영국군들에 대항하여.
  • flight: 도주, 패주, 비행.
  • be forced to -inf: ~하지 않을 수 없다(be compelled to -inf).


  • was at: 연음되면서 [워즈 앳]이 아닌 [워잿]처름 들린다.
  • had led a: had의 [d]가 거의 들리지 않고 led는 다음의 a와 연음되어 듣는 순간 동사 부분의 파악이 어렵다.
  • had been fought: had been이 강세가 없어서 짧고 약하게 발음되어 놓치기 쉽고, 동사의 과거, 과거분사형이 fought처럼 불규칙할 때 듣는 순간 과거완료 수동이라는 문법지식과 fight의 의미를 동시에 알기 어렵다.
