The group of horsemen came down the road. All the important men of the neighborhood were there, military officers in uniform, members of congress, the editors of the important newpapers and others. It was really a brilliant spectacle. There was music and there were flags. On some of the flags there were pictures of the statesman and of the Great Stone Face, facing each other and smiling like two brothers. In these pictures, it must be confessed, the resemblance between the statesman and the Great Stone Face was very clear.

말을 탄 일단의 사람들이 길을 내려왔습니다. 군복 차림의 장교, 의회 의원, 주요 신문의 논설 위원과 그 밖의 인사 등, 인근의 저명 인사들이 모두 거기에 있었습니다. 그것은 정말이지 대단한 광경이었습니다. 음악이 있었고, 깃발들이 펄럭였습니다. 깃발들 가운데에는 그 정치가와 큰 바위 얼굴이 서로 마주보면서 형제처럼 미소 짓고 있는 그림을 담은 것들도 있었습니다. 이 그림들 속에서는 그 정치가와 큰 바위 얼굴이 매우 닮았다는 사실을 인정하고 있음이 분명했습니다.
