At last he reached the place. There indeed was a pool of water, but what was that lying in the pool, and almost filling it? It was a huge, dead snake of the most poisonous kind.
The king stopped. He forgot his thirst. He thought only of the poor dead bird lying on the ground below him.
"The hawk saved my life!" he cried, "and how did I repay him? Oh, he was my best friend, and I have killed him."
He clambered down the bank. He took the bird up gently, and laid it in his hunting bag. Then he mounted his horse and rode swiftly home.
He said to himself,
"I have learned a sad lesson" today, and that is, never to do anything in anger."

마침내 그는 그 장소에 닿았습니다. 그곳엔 정말 물이 고여 있었습니다. 그 러나 웅덩이를 거의 채우다시피 잠겨있는 것은 무엇이었을까요? 그것은 가 장 독성이 강한 종류의 큰 뱀의 시체였습니다.
왕은 멈추었습니다. 그는 갈증도 잊어버렸습니다. 그는 오직 자기 아래 땅 바닥에 누워 있는 죽은 불쌍한 새에 대한 생각뿐이었습니다.
“매는 나의 생명을 구해준 것이다!” 그가 소리쳤습니다. “그런데 나는 그에게 어떻게 보답했던가? 그는 나의 가장 좋은 친구였다. 그런데 나는 그를 죽여버렸다.”
그는 비탈을 기어내려 왔습니다. 그는 정중하게 새를 들어 자기의 사냥 가방에 눕혔습니다. 그리고 말에 올라 부지런히 집으로 돌아왔습니다.
그는 자신에게 말했습니다,
“나는 오늘 슬픈 교훈을 배웠도다, 즉, 어떤 일도 화가 나서 하지 말지니.”
