The Astronomer

An Astronomer used to go out of a night to observe the stars. One evening, as he wandered about the suburbs with his whole attention fixed on the sky, he fell into a deep well. While he lamented his bruises, and cried loudly for help, a neighbor ran to the well, and, learning what had happened, said, “Why, my old friend, in trying to pry into what is in the heavens, do you not manage to see what is on earth?”

한 천문학자가 밤에 나가 별들을 관측하곤 했습니다. 어느 날 저녁, 주의를 온통 하늘에 집중시키고 교외를 거닐다가, 그는 깊은 우물에 빠졌습니다. 그가 상처 때문에 슬퍼하며, 큰 소리로 도와달라고 외치자, 한 이웃 사람이 우물로 달려와서, 무슨 일이 일어났는지 알고는 이렇게 말했습니다. “노인장, 하늘에 있는 것을 꼬치꼬치 알려고 하면서 땅에 있는 것을 보지는 못하십니까?”
