“Oooh,” cried Wendy, “how can you do that?”
“I can do anything I like. I’m clever. If I don’t want to grow up, I won’t. The fairies taught me lots of things. I lived with them for a long time after I ran away. I’ll never grow up if I choose not to!”
Wendy didn’t believe that Peter was as clever as that, but she loved him already. She asked in great surprise, “Do you really know some fairies? Where do they live? Can I speak to them? Where do they come from? What do they eat?”
“It’s like this,” Peter said. “When the first baby laughed for the first time, the laugh broke into a thousand little pieces, and the pieces flew about and all became fairies. But there are not so many now, because children do not believe in fairies. Fairies can’t live if nobody believes in them. And every time a child says, ‘I don’t believe in fairies,’ a fairy falls down dead.”

“오오,” 웬디가 소리쳤습니다. “어떻게 그럴 수 있는데?”
“난 내가 좋아하는 건 뭐든지 할 수 있어. 나는 똑똑해. 내가 자라고 싶지 않으면 안 자랄 거야. 요정들은 내게 많은 것을 가르쳐줬어. 나는 도망친 뒤 요정들과 오랫동안 지냈어. 나는 내가 안 자라기로 결심하면 자라지 않을 거야!”
웬디는 피터가 그렇게 똑똑하다고 믿지는 않았지만, 벌써 그를 사랑했습니다. 웬디는 크게 놀라서 물었습니다. “너 정말 요정들을 아니? 요정들은 어디 사는데? 내가 요정들에게 말할 수 있니? 그들은 어디서 온 거야? 그들은 뭘 먹니?”
“그건 이래.” 피터가 말했습니다. “첫 번째 아기가 처음으로 웃었을 때, 그 웃음은 천 개의 작은 조각으로 부서졌고, 그 조각들이 떠다니며 모두 요정들이 되었어. 그렇지만 요즘은 그렇게 많지 않아. 아이들이 요정을 믿지 않기 때문이야. 요정은 아무도 그들을 믿지 않으면 살 수가 없어. 한 아이가 ‘나는 요정을 믿지 않아’라고 말할 때마다, 한 요정이 쓰러져 죽어.”
