In Italy about three hundred years ago there lived a young man whose name was Galileo. Like Archimedes, he was always thinking and always asking the reasons for things.
He invented the thermometer and simple forms of the telescope and the microscope. He made many important discoveries in science.
One evening when he was only eighteen years old he was in the cathedral at Pisa at about the time the lamps were lighted. The lamps-which burned only oil in those days-were hung by long rods from the ceiling.

약 300년 전 이탈리아에 갈릴레오라는 이름의 한 젊은이가 살았습니다. 아르키메데스처럼, 그도 항상 생각하고 늘 사물의 이치를 탐구하였습니다.
그는 온도계와 단순한 형태의 망원경, 그리고 현미경을 발명했습니다. 그는 과학에서 많은 중요한 발견을 하였습니다.
그의 나이 불과 열여덟 살이던 어느 날 밤, 램프를 켤 시간 즈음에 그는 피사의 대성당에 있었습니다. 당시 석유만을 사용하던 램프들은 긴 막대로 연결되어 천장으로부터 드리워져 있었습니다.
