One day a friend of his, whose name was Damocles, said to him.
"How happy you must be! You have here everything that any man could wish."
"Perhaps you would like to change places with me," said the tyrant. "No, not that, O king!" said Damocles, "but I think, that, if I could only have your riches and your pleasures for one day, I should not want any greater happiness."
"Very well," said the tyrant. "You shall have them."

어느 날 다모클레스라는 그의 친구 하나가 찾아와서 그에게 말했습니다.
“얼마나 행복하겠습니까! 사람들이 바랄 수 있는 건 모두 여기에 갖추고 있으니 말입니다.”
“아마도 자넨 나와 자리를 바꾸고 싶겠지.” 폭군이 말했습니다. “아니오, 그게 아닙니다. 폐하!” 다모클레스가 말했습니다. “그러나 이런 생각은 하지요, 즉, 전하의 부와 즐거움을 단 하루 동안만 가져본다면, 어떤 큰 행복도 바라지 않을 것이라고요.”
“좋아.” 폭군이 말했습니다. “내가 그렇게 해주겠네.”
