I swam on and on, and just when I felt I must give myself up,
I found I could touch the sand. I was now safe.
When I came ashore, I lay down on the grass,
and at once went to sleep, as I was so tired.
When I awoke, the sun was shining in the sky.
I tried toe rise, but, to my surprise, I could not move hand or foot.
I found my chest as well as my arms and legs was fastened to the ground by thin but strong cords.
Even my hair was made so fast to pegs that I could not turn my head.

나는 계속 헤엄쳐 나갔습니다. 그런데 이제는 포기해야 한다고 느낀 바로 그때
나는 모래에 닿을 수 있다는 것을 깨달았습니다. 이제 나는 안전했습니다.
해변으로 나오자 나는 풀밭에 누웠습니다.
그리고 너무 지쳤기 때문에 곧바로 잠이 들었습니다.
내가 잠을 깨어났을 때에는 태양이 하늘에서 빛나고 있었습니다.
나는 일어나려고 했지만, 놀랍게도 손이건 발이건 움직일 수가 없었습니다.
나는 내 양팔과 다리는 물론 가슴까지 가늘지만 튼튼한 끈으로 땅에 묶여 있음을 알게 되었습니다.
심지어는 머리카락까지도 말뚝들에 단단히 묶여 있어서 머리를 돌릴 수가 없었습니다.
