The mayor of a big American city and his wife Kate were inspecting a construction project one day.
A hard-hatted laborer called out to them.
"Kate, remember me?" he asked. "We used to date in high school."
Later, the mayor teased his wife.
"Aren't you glad you married me? You could have been the wife of a construction worker instead of the wife of the mayor."
Responded Kate, "You should be glad you have married me. If you hadn't, he would have been the mayor of this city."

미국의 어느 큰 도시의 시장이 부인과 함께 건설공사장을 시찰했다.

"케이트, 나 기억하지. 우리 고교시절에 데이트했잖아"
나중에 시장은 아내를 놀려댔다.
"당신 나하고 결혼한 걸 다행으로 여겨야겠군. 하마터면 시장부인이 아니라 건설노동자의 마누라가 될 뻔 했잖우"
"나하고 결혼한 걸 다행스럽게 여겨야 할 사람은 당신이라구요. 당신이 나하고 결혼하지 않았다면 지금 저 사람이 시장이 돼있을 거라구요"라고 부인은 응수했다.
