accost: ~에게 다가가 말을 걸다. 본문에서는 수동태로 쓰였으므로, by 뒤에 나온 friend가 a widow에게 말을 건 것이다.

What stopped him?: ‘무엇이 그만두게 만들었는데?’, 즉 ‘왜 그만두게 됐는데?’(=Why did he stop it?).
