열 번이 아니라 억만 번이라도
영어 선생님이 풍부한 어휘력의 중요성을 강조하며 반 아이들에게 말했다. “한 단어를 열 번 사용해 보세요. 평생 자기 것이 될 겁니다.”
교실 뒤쪽에 앉아 있던 한 소녀가 두 눈을 감고 나지막히 중얼거리는 소리가 들렸다. “프레드, 프레드, 프레드, 프레드, 프레드, 프레드, 프레드, 프레드, 프레드, 프레드.”

stress: 강조하다, 역설하다(=emphasize).
large vocabulary: 어휘가 많다고 할 때 형용사 large를 쓴다는 것을 기억해둘 것. cf. He has a small vocabulary.(그는 어휘력이 빈약하다.)
class: class라는 단어 자체에 ‘한 반에서 배우는 학생들’이라는 의미가 들어있다.
for life: 평생.
was heard chanting: 수동태로 쓰여 ‘읊조리는 소리가 들렸다’.
under one's breath: 낮은 음성으로, 속삭이듯(=in a low voice or a whisper).
