Two Martinis

A well-dressed man came into the cocktail lounge each evening. he would be alone but always ordered two martinis. First he would drink one, then move over and drink the other.
The bartender's curiosity got the best of him, so one evening he asked the reason why two cocktails. The man explained that one was his and the other for his 'best friend' who went west for his health. Then a few weeks later the man came in and only ordered one drink. The bartender very solemnly asked, "What.... only one? Did your friend pass away?"
The man replied, "Oh! No! I'm on the wagon."

마티니의 비밀
아주 잘 차려입은 신사가 밤마다 칵테일 라운지에 들렀다. 그는 늘 혼자였지만 항상 마티니 두 잔을 주문했다. 먼저 한 잔을 마신 다음, 자리를 옮겨 나머지 한 잔을 마시곤 했다.
궁금증을 이기지 못한 바텐더가 어느 날 밤, 왜 두 잔의 마티니를 시키는지 물었다. 그 신사는 한 잔은 자기 것이고 다른 한 잔은 요양차 서부에 간 ‘가장 절친한 친구’의 것이라고 설명했다. 그리고 2~3주 후 평상시와 다름없이 그 신사가 왔는데, 마티니를 딱 한 잔만 주문하는 것이었다. 바텐더는 아주 진지하게 물었다. "아니, 한 잔만 이라구요? 친구분이 작고하셨습니까?"
신사가 대답했다. “오, 아닙니다! 내가 술을 끊은 겁니다.”

get the best of: ~을 이기다, 능가하다, ~을 속이다.
solemnly: 엄숙하게, 진지하게.
pass away: 죽다, 작고하다.
on the wagon: 술을 끊고. 당분간만 술을 멀리한다는 의미에 가깝다. ‘물만 마신다’는 뜻의 on the wagon이 어원.
