Potato Growers of Idaho is pursuing a new plan to reduce a potato surplus after dropping a drive to get the federal government to buy extra spuds. The growers' group wants to form a cooperative called Potato Management Co., which would try to cut the surplus by at least 10% by buying up potatoes and getting them off the market. The surplus is depressing prices.

    Q. What do the imperial measures include? Are 'feet', 'miles' also imperial ones? Is everything except metric system imperial measures? First of all, I wonder if it is or not.

    A. 일반적으로 알려진 도량법(measurement system)은 imperial(=British)과 US(inch, feet, yard, mile, acre, pint, gallon, ounce, pound 등 imperial 과 US system은 거의 같음)및 우리에게 잘 알려진 metric system 이 있습니다. 미국의 주유소에서 gas(gasoline)를 넣어본 경험이 있는 사람은 아시겠지만 gas meter의 단위는 liter가 아닌 gallon입니다. 그런데 이 gallon도 US와 imperial measure가 달라, 1 US gallon 이 3.78 liter 인 반면에 imperial(또는 British) gallon 은 4.54 liter를 말합니다. 특히 국제간의 무역업에 종사하는 사람들은 imperial measures인지, 아니면 US measures인지를 명확하게 하지 않으면 막대한 손해를 초래하는 실수를 범할 수 있기 때문에 주의해야 합니다. (옛날가수들 'Peter, Paul & Mary' 가 metric system을 썼더라면 곡명 "500 miles"을 "800 km"로 바꾸어 불렀을 것입니다. 우스꽝스럽게 들리겠지요?)
