Colon(:) and Semicolon(;)
If truth be told, the majority -- mostly white people -- cannot be counted on to know right from wrong on issues involving race.

Consider these examples of the majority's serious wrongheadedness: For more than two centuries, most Americans supported slavery; most Americans believed that black people and women did not deserve the right to vote; before massive TV coverage of white racists brutalizing civil rights workers during the 1960s, most Americans opposed civil rights legislation; most Americans believed that Asians should be in internment camps during World War II; most Americans today believe that we have the right to execute fellow humans.

While contemporary politicians may trust majority opinion, George Washington, our first president, and other founders of the world's greatest democracy did not. They knew only too well, for example, that the overwhelming majority of Europeans supported their monarchies, even when these governments were despotic.

    사실을 말하자면 인종문제에 관한 다수의 -- 주로 백인들의 -- 옳고 그름에 대한 의견은 신뢰할 수가 없다.

    다수의 의견이 커다란 오류를 범했던 예를 살펴보자: 과거 2세기 이상동안 대부분의 미국인들은 노예제도를 지지했다; 대부분의 미국인들은 흑인과 여자들은 투표권을 가질 자격이 없다고 믿은 적이 있었다; 1960년대 백인 인종차별주의자의 흑인 민권운동가들에 대한 잔인한 학대 사실을 TV 에서 대대적으로 보도하기 이전에는 대다수의 미국인들은 민권보호법 제정에 반대를 했다; 2차 대전 당시 대부분의 미국인들은 아시아인들을 포로수용소에 격리해야 한다고 믿었다; 오늘날 대부분의 미국인들은 같은 인간을 처형할 권리가 있다고 믿고 있다.

    요즈음 정치가들은 다수의 의견을 믿을지 모르나 이 세상에서 가장 위대한 민주국가를 탄생시킨 우리의 첫 대통령 George Washington과 다른 개국공신들은 믿지 않았다. 그들은 예를 들어 압도적인 다수의 유럽인들이 그들의 군주국이 독재정치를 행할 때조차도 그 정부를 지지했다는 사실을 잘 알고 있었다.


    ▶ 문법
    Colon은 앞 문장에 대한 보충설명, 예, 인용문 등을 소개하는 경우에 쓴다. 예를 들어 "There is only one thing to say: He did not deserve the punishment"에서 뒷문장의 "그가 그 벌을 받을 정도로 잘못하지 않았다"의 문장은 앞의 "할말이 딱 하나 있다"에 대한 부가 설명을 하고 있다.

    반면에 semicolon은 두 문장이 내용상 서로 밀접한 관계에 있을 때 첫 문장 끝에서 period 대신 쓴다. 예를 들어 "My mother takes care of the housework; my father earns the money"에서 두 문장은 내용상 상호 연관성이 있다.(semicolon 다음 문장은 소문자로 시작하는 데 유의)


    Q."Beware the automatic toilets. Some people were embarrassed when the toilet suddenly opened while they were inside!"

    이 문장을, "자동변기를 조심할 것. 화장실 안에서 변기가 갑자기 열려 당황한 사람들도 있으니깐!"으로 해석하셨는데 제가 보기에는 "안에 있을 때 화장실의 문이 자동으로 열리는 경우가 있으니깐!" 이렇게 되야 하지 않을까… 용???

    A. 대답은 "안 되…용!"입니다.
    Webster 사전은 toilet을 "화장실(bathroom, lavatory)" 또는 "변기(a fixture that consists usually of a water-flushed bowl and seat and is used for defecation and urination)"라고 정의하고 있으며(본문에서는 후자의 의미로 쓰였음), 필자가 간단한 research를 끝낸 후 "automatic toilet"을 "변기뚜껑(toilet lid)과 앉는 좌석(toilet seat)이 사용 전후 자동적으로 열고 닫히는 변기를 말함" 이라고 설명을 했습니다. 재삼 강조하지만 모든 지식을 동원하여도 해석이 애매하면 상상력을 동원시키기 바랍니다. 화장실내에 있는 사람의 의사를 무시하고 제멋대로 활짝 열리는 자동문을 개발한 회사가 있다면 그 회사의 주식은 곧 휴지조각이 되고 말 것입니다. (이 부분 먹으면서 공부하는 독자가 없기를 바람)
