Up to 90 percent of North American parents admit to spanking or slapping their children, whether it's a tap on the bottom or a slap on the hand, according to data from a number of recent U.S. polls.

However, a growing body of scientific study is suggesting that corporal punishment is not just an ineffective way to instill self-control but might harm a child's long-term emotional and psychological development.
