동성연애자들의 법적인 권리를 보호하는 움직임이 이는 가운데 미국의 장로교는 그들의 결혼식 허락여부를 놓고 오랫동안 고심해 오다가 사실상 그들의 관계를 인정하는 한 해결책을 찾았다. 25일자의 The New York Times를 살펴보자.

The highest court of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), a denomination long divided on issues of homosexuality, ruled today that its ministers may conduct religious "holy union" ceremonies for same-sex couples, as long as the ceremonies are not regarded as marriages.

The court said the only way now to ban holy union ceremonies was to change the church's Book of Order, or constitution, which currently prohibits same-sex marriages but says nothing about holy unions.

    그 법정에 의하면 성스러운 의식을 금지할 수 있는 유일한 방법은 이제 그 교회의 율법을 바꾸는 것인데, 그 율법은 동성결혼을 현재 금지하고 있지만 성스러운 결합에 대해서는 아무런 언급을 하지 않고 있다.
