Canada 의 The Globe and Mail 지에는 곰에게 희생당한 사람의 기사가 실려 있는가 하면, 같은 날의 미국의 The Washing Post 지에는 미 정부에서 Idaho 주에 멸종된 grizzly 곰을 다시 번식시키려는 계획을 발표함으로서 이에 대한 찬반 양론이 당연히 대두되고 있다. 주민들은 자신과 가축의 생명에 위협을 느낀다고 주장하는가 하면 환경보호론자(environmentalist) 들은 그 곰들이 인간에 희생당할 것이라는 이유에서 반대하고 있다.

A 24-year-old member of the national biathlon team was killed by a bear while training in the woods on a military base, police said Monday. Colleagues of the woman, identified as Mary-Beth Miller, alerted military police Sunday when she failed to return from her training and police later found her body and noticed a bear bite on her neck as well as bear footprints near her body, a police spokeswoman said.

Wildlife officials would introduce five bears to the Bitterroot Mountains each year for five consecutive years, starting in 2002. They anticipate that the grizzly population, with its slow reproductive cycle, would take more than 100 years to reach the projected goal of about 300 bears.

24세의 국가대표 biathlon 팀 소속의 한 선수가 군 기지내의 숲 속에서 훈련을 하던 중 살해되었다고 경찰이 월요일 발표했다. Mary-Beth Miller로 알려진 그 여자의 동료들은 일요일 그녀가 훈련에서 돌아오지 않자 군 경찰에 알렸다. 연락을 받은 경찰은 후에 그녀의 사체를 찾았으며, 그녀의 사체 근처에서 곰의 발자국뿐만 아니라 그녀의 목을 곰이 물은 흔적을 발견했다고 경찰 대변인은 발표했다.

야생생물 관계자들은 2002년부터 시작하여 5년간 계속적으로 매년 5마리의 곰을 Bitterroot Mountains 에 들여놓을 것이다. 그들은 그 곰의 생식주기가 느린 것을 감안할 때 목표로 하는 300마리 정도로 번식되기까지는 100년 이상이 걸릴 것으로 예상하고 있다.

Q.우리 나라 대학교에서 말하는 논문이란 것을 영어로 표현했을 때 무엇인가요? 저 개인적으로는 essay가 아닐까 하는데 thesis가 맞는 말이라는 의견이 있고.... 사전으로만 결정하기엔 뭔가 확실한 느낌이 덜 드네요.
A. 대학의 학사, 석사, 박사 등의 학위취득을 위한 많은 시간과 노력을 필요로 하는 긴 논문은 thesis입니다. 반면에 한 과목(course)을 수강하면서 여러 번 제출해야 하는 상대적으로 짧은 소논문은 essay 라고 합니다. 예를 들어 '우리는 6.25에 관한 소논문을 써야 한다'는 'We have to write an essay on the Korean War'로 표현하고, '내일 논술형 시험이 있다' 는 'We have an essay exam tomorrow'이지, 'We have a thesis exam tomorrow.' 라고 말하지 않습니다.
