Don't call me 'my lord'.

 영화나 TV드라마 등을 보면 법정에서 검사(prosecutor)나 변호사(lawyer)가 지방판사(judge)를 'your honor'라고 부르는 것을 들을 수 있다. 대법원 판사는 'my lord' 또는 'my lady'등으로 불리는데 요즈음 많은 대법원판사님들은 이 존칭을 불편해 하는 것 같다. Canada의 National Post지의 관련기사를 살펴보자.

The justices of the Supreme Court of Canada have decided to renounce a tradition dating back to the Middle Ages: the prerogative of being addressed as 'my lord', 'my lady', 'your lordship' or 'your ladyship.'

Justice Jack Major said he and his colleagues on the Court voted to drop the 'anachronistic' title, which can be traced back to when English judges really were peers of the realm.

"Supreme Court judges, in court or otherwise, would prefer to be referred to as 'Justice Smith' or 'Justice Jones' rather than 'my lord' or 'my lady,' " he said.

    Canada의 대법원 판사들은 자신들이 'my lord', 'my lady', 'your lordship', 또는 'your ladyship'등으로 불리는 특권을 없애기로 결정을 내렸는데, 이 경칭은 중세에서 유래되었다.

    Jack Major 대법원 판사는 자신과 법정의 동료들이 그 '시대착오적인' 경칭을 폐지하기로 결정했다고 말했으며, 그 경칭은 영국판사들의 신분이 실제로 그 왕국의 귀족이었던 시절에서 유래되었다.

    "대법원 판사들은 법정 안이나 밖에서 'my lord나 'my lady' 보다는 'Justice Smith' 또는 'Justice Jones'로 불리기를 더 바랄 것입니다." 라고 그는 말했다.
