Harris vs. Christopher

 Florida 주에서 진행되는 재개표(recount)의 결과에 민주당 대통령후보자 Al Gore가 기대를 거는 가운데 그 주의 공화당 파 주무장관 Katherine Harris 는 재개표의 deadline을 화요일 오후 5시로 정해 사실상 시간적으로 그 작업의 마무리가 거의 불가능하게 되자 양당의 대립은 심화되었다.

다음은 Harris 의 발표내용이다.
"The electoral process is a balance between the desire of each individual voter to have his or her intended vote recorded and the right of the public to a clear, final result within a reasonable time." Harris said in a statement.

이에 대해 전 미 국무장관 Christopher는 그녀의 이 발표가 정치적이라고 아래와 같이 비난하고 있다.
"Her plan, I'm afraid, has the look of an effort to produce a particular result of the election rather than to ensure that the voice of all the citizens of the state to be heard." Christopher said.

    "선거과정은 각 유권자들의 투표가 실시되는 것과 모든 사람들이 적절한 시간 내에 명백한 최종결과를 알 권리가 조화를 이루어야 합니다."라고 Harris는 성명서에서 발표했다.

    "그녀의 계획은 그 주의 모든 시민들의 의사를 반영시키려는 조치라기보다는 특정한 선거의 결과를 만들어내려는 색채를 띠고 있습니다." 라고 Christopher는 말했다.




    Q. 식당에서 요구하는 계산서를 'bill'이라고 설명한 바가 있다. 이에 대해 미국 동부의 유학생 Jennifer 는 다음의 질문을 던져왔다. "You know, here we always ask 'check' instead of 'bill'. I know both are sort of the same, but I've never heard people asking 'bill', what do you think about it?"

    A. 'Interesting!' 미국의 많은 지역에서는 식당에서의 계산서를 'bill'대신 'check'라고 합니다. 'Check'는 또한 '수표'라는 의미로도 일반적으로 쓰이며 'cash a check'은 '수표를 현금으로 바꾸다'는 뜻으로 흔히 쓰이는 표현입니다. 그리고 'check'는 American English이고, British English의 영향이 남아있는 지역에서는 'cheque'라고 씁니다. "So Jennifer, I'll pay the bill this time, and you pay the check next time, will you?"
