Three suburban Chicago landlords have agreed to pay $100,000 to settle a lawsuit alleging they asked prospective tenants their race and refused to rent to them if they were black, federal prosecutors announced today.

Siblings Alice Calek, Camille Zatopa and Raymond Nemecek also agreed to hire a real estate firm to manage all rental properties they currently operate, according to U.S. Attorney Scott Lassar. The siblings will be barred from being directly involved in the sale or rental of property for three years under the agreement.

According to the lawsuit, Wright called Calek in July 1998 to inquire about an advertisement for an apartment in Cicero. Calek allegedly asked Wright about her race and told her she could not rent to her when she learned Wright was black.
