We need fields!

 학교 당국으로부터 성차별(gender discrimination)을 받는다고 판단한 여고생들이 당국을 상대로 소송을 제기했다.

The girls' softball teams at Titusville High School and Astronaut High School drive miles to play at a public park with dirty bathrooms and dugouts that barely offer shelter.

On the other hand, the boys' baseball teams have on-campus fields with refrigerated water coolers and -- at one school -- lights for night games.

The discrepancies between the teams' facilities is at the heart of a federal trial scheduled to get underway Thursday.

The Brevard County School Board is accused of violating federal and state laws that guarantee boys and girls equal facilities and opportunities to play sports.

The class-action lawsuit asks U.S. District Judge Anne C. Conway to force the school district to build softball fields at Titusville and Astronaut high schools.

Mike Bowling, attorney for the school board, said the district can't afford to build the fields at this time. Even the boys' football teams at the two schools have to play off campus, school officials note. -The Miami Herald 20일자-

    Titusville 과 Astronaut 고등학교의 여자 연식야구 팀들은 경기를 하려면 수 마일을 운전해 가서 불결한 화장실과 선수대기소의 시설이 형편없는 공원을 이용해야 하는 실정이다.

    반면에, 남학생 야구 팀들은 냉장냉수기가 갖추어진 캠퍼스 경기장들을 - 한 학교에서는 야간경기를 위한 조명시설까지 갖추고 있는 경기장을 - 사용할 수 있다.

    남, 여학생이 사용할 수 있는 이 시설들에 대한 차이가 금요일 진행될 연방재판의 쟁점이다.

    Brevard 카운티 교육위원회는 남녀학생들에게 동등하게 스포츠시설과 기회를 주기로 되어있는 연방과 주법을 위반한 이유로 고소를 당했다.

    그 집단소송은 미 지방법원판사 Anne C. Conway에게 그가 학구에 압력을 가해 Titusville과 Astronaut 고등학교에 연식야구장을 만들 수 있도록 요청하고 있다.

    학구측 변호사 Mike Bowling은 현재로서는 학구가 경기장을 만들 재정적 여유가 없다고 말했다. 학교 관계자들은 두 학교의 남학생 풋볼 팀조차도 캠퍼스 밖에서 시합을 해야 하는 형편이라고 말한다.

'Table d'hote'는 우선 '따블 도우트'로 발음되며, 한 가격에 appetizer, salad and/or soup, main dish, dessert등이 포함되는 정식을 말하며, 서양의 많은 식당에서는 점심특별메뉴(lunch special menu)로 한 가격에 모든 것을 포함시키는 table d'hote menu가 유행이다. 같은 음식을 a la carte menu에서 시키면 당연히 비싸게 계산된다. 참고로 원탁(round table)에서 여러 사람이 정찬을 나눌 때는 오른쪽에 놓인 물잔이 나의 것인지, 아니면 왼쪽이 나의 것인지 헷갈린다. 답은?
