The owners of a north Florida liquor store and lounge were charged today with violating the civil rights of a black Maryland lawmaker who was told he had to go to a back room to be served.

"All he wanted was a cold beer, what he got instead was a cold reminder, that in some places, repugnant distinctions between first and second class citizens are still being made," said Bob Butterworth, Florida Attorney General.

"That point was driven home when Mr. Branch was told he would have to re-enter the lounge through a separate entrance and be served in a back room."
