Not only...도치구문
Harvard 학보 THE HARVARD CRIMSON(신문명 앞에 정관사 "The" 가 온다는 사실을 간과하지 마시길)의 한 칼럼에는 "닭들의 수난"에 실려있다. 아래는 chicken을 학대하는 학생들에 격분해 펜대를 잡은 한 심리학 교수의 글이다. 골난 그 교수님의 열이 독자들에게도 후끈후끈 실감나게 느껴지기를 바란다.
It has come to my attention that approximately one week ago, every newly-elected member of the Phoenix club was given a live chicken and instructed by their elders to keep close contact with them while going to classes, going to final club events and so forth. Apparently, most carry the chickens around in boxes that seem to be a little over a foot square. They get jostled around between classes, take up seats (in their boxes) amongst the noisy crowds in the dining halls and are penned-up in student rooms at night (on the floor). They apparently have no time to run free except when trying to escape, and to my knowledge, there is no one giving them proper animal care.

What the students in the Phoenix club have done is inexcusable. Not only do they have no right to treat chickens with such horrible care, they have no right to treat any animal in such unthoughtful and uncaring ways. It should never have started and should stop immediately. One hopes that these students will feel remorse concerning their pathetic treatment of a creature that shares this planet with us.

약 일주일 전 Phoenix 클럽의 모든 신입 회원들이 선배들로부터 퍼덕거리는 닭을 한 마리씩 나눠 받고는 강의실이나 클럽행사 등에 동반토록 지시 받은 사실이 나의 주목을 끌었다. 닭을 받은 대부분의 학생들은 1피트 남짓한 상자 속에 닭을 가두어 들고 다녔으며, 그 결과 닭들은 강의실을 옮겨 다닐 때마다 이리저리 끌려 다녔고, 교내식당에서는 상자 속에 갇힌 채로 의자 위에 앉혀서 학생들의 소음을 견뎌야 했으며, 밤에는 기숙사 바닥에 설치해 놓은 닭장 속에 갇혀 있어야만 했다. 명백히 그 닭들은 달아날 시도를 하는 경우를 제외하고는 운동할 기회도 가지고 있지 못하며 또한 그들을 올바르게 다루는 사람이 아무도 없는 것으로 나는 알고있다.

Phoenix 클럽 학생들의 행위는 변명의 여지가 없다. 닭을 그처럼 학대할 수 없는 것은 물론이거니와 동물을 그처럼 무분별하고 소홀히 다룰 수 있는 권리가 그들에게 있는 것도 아니다. 동물 학대행위는 결코 시작되지 말아야 했으며 지금이라도 즉시 중단되어야 한다. 이 지구상에서 우리와 공존하고 있는 한 생물체에 대한 터무니없는 취급을 그들 자신은 반성하기 바라는 마음이다.

Q."정종이 영어로 sake인지요?" -Jun Ho Shin-
A. 애주가들 군침 도는 질문입니다. 북미에서는 정종이 사케(sake)로 알려져 있습니다. 일본말이죠. Webster 사전에는 sake 가 다음과 같이 정의되어 있습니다:"a Japanese alcoholic beverage of fermented rice usually served hot"(쌀을 발효시켜 만든 일본의 술. 보통 따뜻하게 마심) 북미에서 한잔 생각날 때 초밥집(sushi bar) 이나 중국식당(Chinese restaurant)에 들러 간단히 "Do you have sake?" 라고 확인한 다음 "Give me a bottle('half bottle', 'a quarter liter'등) please" 또는 "Can I have a bottle please?" 로 주문할 수 있으며("I'd like to order a bottle of sake" 라는 formal 한 표현도 쓸 수 있겠습니다) 따끈하게 해달라면 "Make it hot please" 또는 "Can(보다 정중하게 요구하려면 Could) you please serve it hot?" 또는 "Can I drink hot sake?" 정도면 무난합니다.
