I didn't know, I was sleeping

 얼마 전 한국에서 일어났던 미국교환학생 살인사건은 이곳 북미신문들의 사회면을 장식하고 있다. Pittsburgh Tribune-Review 기사의 일부를 살펴보자.

Funeral arrangements were completed Monday for the 21-year-old exchange student who had been studying abroad at Keimyung University in Taegu, South Korea, for only about two weeks before she was brutally murdered in Seoul on March 17.

While autopsy results are pending, Korean authorities told The Associated Press last week that Penich died as a result of massive injuries to her chest, neck and face. Imprints from large jogging shoes found on her body indicated that she had been kicked or stomped.

Korean police also reported that the woman's body was found nude. However, initial findings did not indicate that she had been sexually assaulted, police said, noting they believe she was either in or emerging from a shower when she was attacked.

A student from Russia who was in the next room told police that she heard an angry male voice coming from the room Penich was sharing with a female student from Finland.

Her roommate, though, told authorities she was in a deep sleep and did not hear a struggle during the night. She found Penich's body when she awoke at about 8 a.m. March 18, Korean time.

    대한민국 대구의 계명대학에 유학 온 지 2주 만인 지난 3월 17일 서울에서 잔인하게 살해당한 21세의 교환학생에 대한 장례식 준비가 월요일 끝났다.

    사체부검 결과를 기다리고 있는 가운데 한국당국은 Penich가 가슴과 목, 얼굴에 입은 심한 상처로 인하여 사망했다고 지난주 AP 통신에게 알렸다. 그녀의 몸에서 발견된 큰 치수의 조깅화 자국은 그녀가 차이거나 짓밟혔다는 사실을 말해주고 있었다.

    한국경찰은 또한 그 여자의 사체가 알몸으로 발견되었다고 보고했으나, 최초 발견될 당시 그녀는 성폭행을 당한 흔적이 없었으며, 폭행 당할 당시 샤워 중이었거나 샤워를 마치고 나오는 중이었던 것으로 믿는다고 말했다.

    옆방의 한 러시아학생은 Penich와 한 핀란드여학생이 함께 머물던 방에서 나는 화난 남자의 목소리를 들었다고 경찰에 진술했다.

    하지만 Penich의 룸메이트는 깊은 잠에 빠져있었기 때문에 밤사이에 싸우는 소리를 듣지 못했다고 당국에 말했다. 그녀는 한국시간 3월 18일 오전8시 잠에서 깨었을 때 Penich의 사체를 발견했다.
