Despite a dramatic life-saving effort, a Grade 6 student died of mysterious causes yesterday after collapsing in front of his phys-ed teacher and 50 other students on an outdoor track.

The 11-year-old Secord Elementary School student had just begun a baton-passing exercise with his physical education class at the end of the school day when the tragedy unfolded.

"His eyes rolled back in his head, he tried to speak and nothing came out and then he hit the ground very hard," Toronto District School Board communications officer Stephanie Bolton said yesterday.

When the phys-ed teacher discovered the boy had no pulse, and his breathing was laboured, he sent a student to the office to call emergency services and then began CPR on the boy, she said.

Several ambulances arrived promptly and crashed through a padlocked gate to get to the track area where the boy lay without vital signs.

Two phys-ed classes on the field at the time looked on as the emergency personnel tried to resuscitate the boy. He was taken to nearby Toronto East General Hospital where he died shortly after. Family members were at the hospital yesterday evening. "We have nothing on the school health record that would indicate a medical condition," Ms. Bolton said.
