Jean MacArthur, wife of the late Gen. Douglas MacArthur, who won admirers around the world with her vibrancy and charm, died Saturday. She was 101.
Mrs. MacArthur died at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, said Col. William Davis, director of the MacArthur Foundation in Norfolk, Va.
he was at her general's side in war and peace. She accompanied him aboard a PT boat when he was ordered out of the Philippines to escape a Japanese siege at the outset of the war in the Pacific. She represented him at official and social functions and mingled with throngs of Japanese on her trips around Japan during the postwar occupation. She shared his homecoming when he was relieved of command during the Korean War.
Near his death in 1964, MacArthur described her as "my constant friend, sweetheart and devoted supporter."
She had remained active in theater, opera, civic and philanthropic pursuits and served as honorary chairman of the Norfolk, Va., foundation created as a memorial to her husband.
"Jean MacArthur has witnessed the great cataclysms of our time, survived war and peace, conquered tragedy and known triumph," President Reagan said in awarding her the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1988.
The citation for the medal, the nation's highest civilian award, called her "a shining example, a woman of substance and character, a loyal wife and mother, and like her general, a patriot."
"People are so good to me," she often said.

생전 자신이 지녔던 생동감과 매력으로 세상사람들로부터 숭배를 받던 고 더글러스 맥아더 장군의 부인 Jean MacArthur 여사가 토요일 향년 101세로 세상을 떠났다.
버지니아주의 Norfolk에 위치한 맥아더 재단의 이사 William Davis 대령은 맥아더 부인이 뉴욕의 Lenox Hill Hospital에서 숨을 거두었다고 발표했다.
전시에나 평화시에나 그녀는 항상 남편의 곁에 머물렀다. 태평양전쟁이 시작될 당시 장군이 일본군의 포위망을 피해 필리핀을 탈출하도록 명령받았을 때 그녀는 PT정을 타고 남편을 뒤따랐다. 공식적 사교적 각 행사에서 그녀는 남편을 대신했으며 전후 일본점령 시절에는 그 나라를 여행하면서 대중들과 잘 어울렸다. 한국전쟁 당시 남편이 지휘권을 박탈당한 후 귀국 길에 오를 때도 그녀는 그를 동반했다.
1964년 임종을 앞두고 맥아더는 그녀를 "나의 영원한 친구이자 연인이며 헌신적인 후원자"로 불렀다.
그녀는 연극, 오페라, 시민이 할 역할 및 자선활동에 적극적으로 참여했으며 남편을 기리기 위해 설립된 버지니아의 Norfolk재단의 명예의장을 지내기도 했다.
"Jean MacArthur 여사는 우리 시대의 격변기를 경험한 산 증인이며 전쟁과 평화를 겪으면서 비극을 극복하고 승리의 의미를 터득한 분입니다," 라고 레이건 대통령은 1988 그녀에게 대통령자유훈장을 수여하는 자리에서 말했다.
민간인에게 주어지는 국가 최고의 상인 그 메달은 그녀가 "남들의 귀감이며, 본질과 인격을 갖춘 충실한 아내이자 어머니이며, 남편과 같이 애국자"라는 내용을 담고 있었다.

국어와 마찬가지로 영어도 불필요한 표현의 반복을 싫어한다. 예를 들어"내년에 타운하우스를 한 채 사서 세를 줄 계획이다" 라는 표현을 할 때, "I plan to buy a town house next year and plan to rent it" 라고 표현하면 and 이하의 plan to 는 불필요하게 중복되는 부분이 된다. 마찬가지로 한 주어에 여러 개의 현재완료시제가 열거된다면 두 번째부터 중복되는 "have"는 생략시키는 것이 바람직하다.
위 본문의 "Jean MacArthur has witnessed the great cataclysms of our time, survived war and peace, conquered tragedy and known triumph," 부분도 "Jean MacArthur has witnessed the great cataclysms of our time, has survived war and peace, has conquered tragedy and has known triumph," 형태의 문장의 중복되는 has를 생략시킨 표현이다. 그럼 독자들도 한번....
