clean
[청소하다]를 의미하는 기본 동사로, When your apartment is dirty, you have to clean it. (아파트가 지저분하면 청소해야 한다.)처럼 쓴다.
청소하는 방법도 다양한데, 창문은 물로 wash(씻다)하고, 집안 먼지나 구석 구석은 진공 청소기로 vacuum(청소하다)하며, 방바닥은 걸레로 wipe(훔치다)한다. 또 차는 wax한 뒤 polish(문질러 광내다)하는게 보통이다. 이처럼 There are many ways to clean things. (청소하는 방법은 여러가지이다.)

sweep
빗자루 같은 물건을 이용해 청소하는 것, 즉 쓰는 것이 sweep이다.
예를 들면, Every morning, the caretaker in a public park sweeps the ground. (공원 관리인은 매일 아침 바닥을 쓴다.)라고 한다.
한편, 앞 예문처럼 sweep 뒤에 청소하는 [장소]가 올 때는 이 동사를 단독으로 쓸 수 있지만 [사물]이 올 때는 sweep out(쓸어낸다), sweep up(쓸어 모으다)처럼 전치사를 붙인다.
예를 들면, If the floor of your car is dirty, you sweep out the dirt. (차 바닥이 지저분하면 먼지를 털어낸다.)

dust
털이개나 부드럽고 깨끗한 천 등으로 물건 표면에 붙어 있는 먼지를 털거나 닦아 내는 것을 말한다.
Usually you dust things inside your homes.(당신은 늘 집안에 있는 물건의 먼지를 털어낸다.)처럼 쓸 수 있다. 또, You can even buy special clothes for dusting - they have a soft surface that picks up the dust. (먼지를 제거하는 면이 부드럽게 되어 있는 특수 천을 살 수도 있다.)에서 처럼 dust는 [먼지]라는 명사로 더 친숙할 것이다.

scrub
천이나 솔 등을 이용하여 세게 문질러 더러움을 제거할 때 쓰는 동사가 scrub이다.
보통 때가 찌들었을 때 이런 청소 방법을 쓰며 When you clean the greasy kitchen fan, you probably have to scrub the surface quite hard. (기름때 묻은 주방의 환풍기를 청소할 때는 표면을 아주 힘껏 닦아야 할 것이다.)처럼 사용한다.
또, 오염 정도가 심할 때는 Usually scrubbing is done with a cloth or sponge that has a rough surface. (대게 표면이 거친 천이나 스폰지로 문지른다.)

clear
장애물을 다른 장소로 이동시켜 정리한다는 뜻으로, If there is snow on the sidewalk in front of your house, you might take a shovel to clear the sidewalk. (집앞 보도에 눈이 쌓이면 삽으로 보도를 치울 것이다.)처럼 쓴다.
또, 사람을 다른 장소로 이동시킨다는 뜻으로도 써 When the leader of a country is coming, the police have to clear the street. (일국의 지도자가 오면 경찰은 사람들이 도로로 들어오지 못하도록 정리해야 한다.)와 같이 표현한다.


Snowplows the roads after a heavy snowstorm.
(큰눈이 내린 뒤에는 제설차가 도로를 청소한다.)
The barbecue grill is filthy with grease.
You have to it hard with a brush.
(기름때로 바비큐 그릴이 지저분하다. 솔로 힘껏 닦아야 한다.)
Taxi drivers use long feather sticks to the outside of their cars.
(택시 기사는 깃털 달린 긴 막대로 차 바깥을 청소한다.)
Workers in stations often have to up cigarette butts.
(역무원들은 자주 담배 꽁초를 쓸어야 한다.)
The President’s car is coming, so the police officers have to the road and tell people to stand back on the sidewalk.
(대통령차가 오고 있어 경찰관들은 도로를 정리하고 사람들에게 보도로 내려오지 말라고 말해야 한다.)
