...로부터 ∼을 알게 되다: learn from... of∼ / learn through... of∼[that∼]
"∼에 대해 알게 되다"는 learn of[about], 즉 become informed (of)로 표현할 수 있습니다.
(1) His mother learned of her son's success in the newspapers. (어머니는 신문을 통해 자식이 성공한 것을 알았다.)
(2) His mother learned from the newspaper that her son had succeeded.
"learn of[about]"는 "∼에 대해 알게 되다"는 의미로서 다음에 명사구가 나오고, 만약 that절이 나오게 되면 전치사 of나 about는 생략됩니다. 즉 접속사 that 앞에는 전치사가 올 수 없습니다. 단 하나의 예외는 in that(=because)이며, 이 외에 접속사 앞에 전치사가 나오는 경우는 오직 who, what, when, where, how 등 Wh-로 시작되는 접속사가 이끄는 절입니다. 몇 가지 예를 들어보도록 하죠.
(1) Nobody knows for what the British army is there.
(2) Nobody could decide as to what to do.
(3) Nobody had doubt about whether you've made the right decision.
다시 한번, that이나 if가 이끄는 절 앞에는 전치사가 오지 않는다는 점을 잘 기억해 두십시오.
